Utrecht
Utrecht surprised us at every turn. What began as a one-day getaway quickly became a city we wished we had explored for much longer.
The Day Trip That Should Have Been Three Days
Some destinations live up to expectations. Others quietly exceed them.
Our first visit to Utrecht was planned as a simple day trip. We expected attractive canals, a pleasant city center, and a few good opportunities for photography. What we found instead was a city with its own personality, distinct from Amsterdam and rich in surprises around almost every corner.
From the moment we checked into the Mother Goose Hotel Utrecht, we knew we had found something special. Located on the lively Ganzenmarkt in the heart of Utrecht’s historic center, this charming boutique hotel combines character, comfort, and exceptional service. A review had promised beds and pillows so comfortable that guests wished they could take them home, and it wasn’t exaggerating. After our stay, it was easy to see why the hotel received a Michelin distinction in 2025.

By the time we headed home with a stopover in Liege Belgium, we realized our mistake. One day was enough to introduce us to Utrecht. But nowhere near enough to experience it.
A City Worth Wandering
For us, the best moments in Utrecht often happened when we weren’t looking for anything specific. A walk down a side street revealed colorful facades, carefully maintained homes, and architectural details that seemed designed to reward those willing to slow down and look closely.
The city feels intimate without feeling small. Historic buildings, narrow streets, and unexpected courtyards create a sense of discovery that encourages curiosity rather than checklists.

Coffee, Conversation, and Canal-Side Life
Utrecht surprised us at every turn. What began as a one-day getaway quickly became a city we wished we had explored for much longer.
Sidewalk cafés spill onto narrow streets, locals gather over coffee, and visitors quickly adapt to the slower pace. Unlike cities that seem to rush from one attraction to the next, Utrecht invites lingering. The experience becomes less about sightseeing and more about participation.

A City Built on Two Wheels

Bicycles are woven into the fabric of daily life throughout the Netherlands, and Utrecht embraces that tradition wholeheartedly.
Rows of bicycles lined streets, squares, and historic buildings throughout the city. Rather than standing out as tourist attractions, they simply blend into everyday life, providing a visual reminder of how thoughtfully designed Dutch cities can be.
Evening Along the Canals

As daylight faded, Utrecht became even more enchanting.
Lights reflected across the water while historic buildings glowed against the evening sky. The city’s unique canal system and lower-level waterside walkways create an atmosphere that feels both lively and remarkably intimate.
This was the moment when Utrecht truly surprised us.
Looking Up

Before leaving, we found ourselves drawn to the illuminated Dom Tower rising above the city.
Standing beneath it after dark provided a fitting conclusion to the day. The tower has watched over Utrecht for centuries, and its presence serves as a reminder that this city has far more stories to tell than can be discovered in a single visit.
Final Thoughts
Some places earn a recommendation. Utrecht earned a return trip.
Between the welcoming atmosphere, excellent cafés, photogenic canals, historic architecture, local food, and walkable streets, the city embodies many of the qualities we look for when exploring Europe at a slower pace.
We arrived expecting a pleasant day out.
We left planning our next visit.
