A Graduation Gift Beyond Measure: Sofia Comes to Europe
From graduation cap to Venetian canals: Sofi's first European adventure begins.
There are gifts that are opened once and eventually forgotten.
Then there are gifts that continue to unfold for years.
When my granddaughter Sofi graduated from high school, we wanted to give her something different. Not another possession, not something that would sit on a shelf, but an experience. Something that could broaden horizons, spark curiosity, and create memories that would last long after the photographs were taken.
So we invited her to join us in Venice.
For a young woman from Colorado, it would be her first journey to Europe. For us, it was an opportunity to share one of the world’s most remarkable cities while watching someone experience it with fresh eyes.
In many ways, Venice became the perfect graduation present. It is a city unlike anywhere else, a place that reminds travelers that the world is far bigger, richer, and more surprising than they may have imagined.
Becoming Part of the Adventure

One of my favorite memories occurred in St. Mark’s Square. Surrounded by centuries of Venetian history, Sofi tried on a captain’s hat from a nearby vendor.
It was a simple moment, the kind that would never appear in a guidebook, but it captured the spirit of the trip perfectly.
Travel is not only about observing a place. It is about engaging with it. Sometimes that means wandering down an unfamiliar alley. Sometimes it means trying unfamiliar food. Sometimes it means putting on a captain’s hat in Venice and laughing at how perfectly it fits the moment.
These are often the memories that stay with us longest.
Crossing Into Adulthood

Venice is a city of bridges.
Hundreds of them connect neighborhoods, islands, and communities. During our walks through the city, we crossed countless bridges without giving much thought to their symbolism.
Looking back at this photograph, however, I see something more.
A graduation marks a bridge between one chapter of life and the next. Standing between childhood and adulthood, Sofi was beginning a journey that stretches far beyond Venice.
This trip became one of the first steps across that bridge.
The Gift of a First European Journey

The greatest gift we can give the next generation may not be something they can hold in their hands.
It may be the opportunity to see beyond their horizon.
Venice was our granddaughter’s graduation gift. The photographs capture a few moments, but the true gift was a first glimpse of a wider world and the memories we created together along the way.
Piazza San Marco

Venice was the destination. The gift was discovering it together.
Update…….. Sofi is now attending university at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, majoring in Art marketing. Seems like the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
